Professor Ooi appointed Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters

By David Murphy

KAUST Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Boon S. Ooi has been appointed Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters beginning January 1, 2022. Following a series of interviews, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society’s Publication Council recommended to the IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors that Ooi be appointed EiC of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters from January 1, 2022, until December 31, 2024.

Published semimonthly, the 33-year-old IEEE Photonics Technology Letters covers state-of-the-art capabilities in the theory, design, fabrication, application, performance, packaging and reliability of lasers, optoelectronics, and photonics devices.

“I am very proud and excited to be appointed EiC of the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. It is a huge honor to me,” Ooi said.

Ooi began his academic career at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in electronics and electrical engineering at the University of Glasgow, U.K. Prior to joining KAUST in 2009, he co-founded a startup based in California, which he ran for four years, before joining Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, U.S. At Lehigh, he held a faculty position and headed the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanostructure Laboratory from 2003 to 2009.

Ooi has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal papers in the area of optoelectronics and photonics. He is also a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optics and Photonics, the Institute of Physics, London, and an Elected Fellow of the United States National Academy of Inventors (NAI). The Director of the KACST Technology Innovation Center (TIC) on Solid State Lighting at KAUST has served on the editorial board of the IEEE Photonics Journal,  OSA Optics Express, and the SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics.

“I am very thankful to the IEEE Photonics Society’s Publication Council committee for the vote of confidence in appointing me to this prestigious position. I would like to recognize Professor Jianping Yao (University of Ottawa), my predecessor. I hope to endeavor to get close to the very high standard that Prof. Yao sets for the journal,” Ooi concluded.
