International Year of Light 2015: CEMSE Open Day
International Year of Light 2015:
CEMSE Open Day
The Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering Division invited the KAUST community to join the celebration for the International Year of Light 2015 (IYL 2015). Three laboratories – the Photonics Lab (CEMSE), the Nano Energy Lab (CEMSE) and the Functional Nanomaterials Lab (SPERC, PSE) – opened their doors to let the public explore the latest exciting research outcomes in the lighting world.
By dedicating 2015 to lighting, the United Nations (UNESCO) is recognizing the importance of lighting as a fundamental factor for human development and personal wellbeing. Light-based technologies play a vital role in our daily lives and photonics research has reached the status of a cross-cutting research field of the 21st century science. Photonics have revolutionized communication networks, energy and healthcare sectors. Light-based technologies have also been the turning point of the cultural, economic and political changes we are witnessing around the world.
CEMSE celebrated IYL 2015 by promoting a deeper understanding of the latest achievements in photonics research, highlighting the history of light from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to the latest discoveries in optical communications that are powering today‘s Internet revolution.
The event was guided by Prof. Boon Ooi and was held on Thursday, December 3, 2015.
